"Shop" in Finnish: kauppa, and the three forms you need
kauppa
Say it: KOW-ppa. In Finnish, stress is always on the first syllable.
Kauppa means "shop" or "store" (and also "trade"). The place forms are kaupassa (in the shop), kauppaan (to the shop) and kaupasta (from the shop).
In, to and from
Finnish uses endings where English uses prepositions. This is the pattern you will meet again and again with places:
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| kaupassa | in / at the shop | Olen kaupassa. I'm at the shop. |
| kauppaan | to the shop | Menen kauppaan. I'm going to the shop. |
| kaupasta | from the shop | Tulen kaupasta. I'm coming from the shop. |
Notice that the double pp becomes a single p in kaupassa and kaupasta. This is called consonant gradation, and you will see it in many Finnish words.
